The Harlem Renaissance movement was led by a group of DREAMERS. The artists, writers, musicians, singers, educators, and activists of the time had to be inspired by vivid dreams of a better America because they injected innovative and fresh ideas into the American culture, in spite of racial segregation. Although Harlem was the epicenter of their dreams, the impact of these “dreamers” has had a global and sustainable impact on music, art, and literature. In addition, their avant-garde approach to social literature (“writin is fightin”) sent especially strong political blows to a society that was not so accepting of African Americans – once upon a time – but the dream lives on today.
Analyze the poems of Langston Hughes and the artwork of Jacob Lawrence. Interpret their dreams and/or explain their work. What are your dreams?
Dreams
Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.
Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.
Langston Hughes
